Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, officially opens its new graduate building in Suzhou, China, this week. Partnering with China’s Southeast University, president of Monash, Ed Bryne, will attend an opening ceremony this Thursday 24th October 2013 along with Professor Yi Hong, president of China’s Southeast University based in Suzhou, near Shanghai. Also in attendance will be Australian minister for trade and investment, Andrew Robb and the premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine.

The first students will leave from the graduate school with master’s degrees from both institutions in 2014. The initial cohort numbers 200, but the numbers are expected to grow to around 1,400. Courses include information technology systems, industrial design, applied linguistics and international business.

Monash University establishes further international credentials with its joint graduate school in China

Monash University, the Faculty of Business and Economics of which is ranked in the top 20 business schools in the Asia Pacific region in the QS Global 200 Business School Report, is the first in Australia to be allowed to operate a university in China and the first foreign university to be granted a license for the establishment of a graduate school.

The new building in Suzhou is 60,000 square meters and boasts cutting-edge facilities which will support growth in research and education in a range of industries from economics to engineering. The Joint Graduate School will be joined by the establishment of a Joint Research Institute which will conduct multidisciplinary research projects in areas particularly important to Australian and Chinese industry, including nanotechnology, bioinformatics, water, energy, and light metals.

Monash University is Australia’s largest university and continues to expand its operations overseas. In addition to its new school in Suzhou, Monash has two international campuses situated in Malaysia and South Africa as well as international centers in India and Italy. It also boasts an alliance with the UK’s University of Warwick, along with collaborations with other institutions and corporations around the world. Monash is also a part of the Group of Eight, a prestigious affiliation between Australia’s leading universities which recognizes excellence in teaching and research.
